I am never that late, it's usually done before December but all the same it was fun rushing around doing the last minute panic buy.
So anyway, what have I been up to on the sewing front? Bags! My stock was sold out completely in the festive season so now it's all hands to the pumps and major re stock and fabric shopping (my fav bit). So here's a few that I've run up lately.
I wanted to share a pic of the bag I've just finished, for some reason, even though it has skulls on, it reminds me of Christmas.
It's been a busy old time, we moved house and I have been run off my feet with work and the summer holidays, and to be honest just a little on the lazy side as for once up here in Scotland we had great weather for nearly all of the summer rather than the two days we usually get.
As I mentioned work has been rather busy and I've been sewing away like a woman possessed which has left me with a huge pile of scraps of fabric. So, what to do with them? No time just now for a lovely but fiddely bit of patchwork so I made these .............

....... so simple yet rather effective don't you think? The beauty of them is there really is nothing to making them other than choosing the motif from whatever fabric you have, just some iron on interfacing and a close zig zag onto some faux leather (my new favourite material to play with) and a wee keyring thingy, what do you call them anyway? So off you go and raid your scrap box and rustle up some nice little stocking fillers :)moggymaniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18023383519323773774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6834900503991562667.post-70036591533781600702013-04-14T20:18:00.001+01:002013-04-14T20:18:21.705+01:00Hard at workIt's all go at Little Red HQ, a couple of big events coming up so the sewing machine has gone into over drive.
First off you need to measure yourself, you need your waist measurement, your hip (round the biggest part at your bum), the length from your waist to where you want the flat panel to end then from the bottom of the panel to the bottom of the skirt.
Next you need to draw your pattern. Take your waist measurement in inches and add 4 (in my case that's 34 inches + 4) and divide it by 2 (19 inches). Take your drop from waist to hip and add 2 inches (for me it was 8 inches + 2). Last off take the hip measurement and add 4 (40 +4 for me) and divide by 2 (22 inches). Decide if you want to do a straight or curved shape (I did straight as I'm lazy and not so curvy). Also because I'm lazy and it is less complicated I made my pattern shape to be cut on the fabric fold. So that's the front of the skirt. If you have a fairly flat bottom then cut this shape twice, if you are slightly more prominant in the posterior then for the back or the skirt add a bit of a curve to the bottom of the pattern so it hangs down slightly in the middle once you cut on the fold.
That's the tricky part over, the rest of the pattern pieces are basically rectangles. The ruffle is entirely up to you, I recommend at least twice the width of the full hip measurement to get a bit of full on rufflyness.
Making up............. with right sides together stitch one side of the front panel to the back panel. At the other side add the zip and close the remaining length of the seam. Add the waist band (there's plenty tutorials out there to show you how). So now you have what looks like and extremely short skirt.
Next up make a very large tube from your fabric for the ruffle and hem the bottom edge. On the top edge make gather stitches until it measures the same circumference as the bottom of your teeny wee skirt bit and with right sides facing stitch together making sure your ruffles are even.
Check the post below for the finished result.
We came down with the dreaded lurgy in our house but all better now.
So on to 2013, we may only be a few days in but so far it's lookin good. The weather has perked up a little (always a bonus) and I have some stock in a local boutique as of today with the opportunity to add lots more. It's quite exciting really having only really done craft fairs and a little online selling to have my bits in a real live physical shop so fingers crossed that will go well.
Also this year I have done battle with my unthreaded serger and won. Two hours of foul language and online help and it finally was ready to go. Moral of that story is take a pic before you unthread and never leave it unattended with small kids who like to fiddle with tension dials.
I only have one resolution this year and that is to attempt to up my online presence so more blogging and etsy and folksy and of course good old facebook.
Happy new year to you all xmoggymaniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18023383519323773774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6834900503991562667.post-32018595047304249732012-11-09T12:37:00.000+00:002012-11-09T12:37:26.993+00:00POP, POP, POP!!!After much research and hunting about I have found the perfect snap setter for me. I have problems with the tendons in my wrists so had set my heart on the type that you hammer the snaps in as opposed to plier type squeezy things. Well I couldn't find a nice sturdy one in the UK and the postage was more than the item to order from elsewhere. By chance I came across a review for the KAM snap setter, so glad I did. It's a bargain (£11), the snaps are cheap and come in a huge assortment of colours and yes it's a pliers type but because the snaps are plastic rather than metal I have no problem getting enough of a squeeze on to fix them securely. My only problem now is what to snapify? The cat? the kids? everything :)moggymaniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18023383519323773774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6834900503991562667.post-32757444222521914212012-10-27T17:52:00.002+01:002012-10-27T17:52:17.157+01:00First time in a long timeWell, I'm back from my first craft fair in a long time. I gave up doing them a while back as I found them to be badly advertised and poorly attended and there for costly. My how things have changed! Lovely big tables in a brightly lit hall, lots of variation of items and a generally good happy atmosphere. It was also a nice way of meeting other crafters and a sneaky bit of market research to boot. The next one is in a months time, just ready for the mad festive shopping spree.moggymaniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18023383519323773774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6834900503991562667.post-38958028605164678142012-10-18T01:17:00.000+01:002012-10-18T01:17:52.727+01:00Super hero sexyI've been busy busy with stuff for a craft fair that's coming up soon and got bored of the usual little zippy purses so decided to elaborate a little and make something that was intended to be a bit more grown up. Ha ha major fail! I can't resist a bit of super hero fabric so although the design may be a little more sophisticated my inner child won through.
Just a quick post, this is a little boxed corner bag with a rather large tartan ruffle and yes I did cheat and used webbing for the handles :)moggymaniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18023383519323773774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6834900503991562667.post-7545041545963764882012-08-12T16:51:00.000+01:002012-08-12T16:51:28.840+01:00Variation on a themeSo the curvy bag is gorgeous (buttercup bag from made by rae) but sometimes the fabric is just so lovely that you want to see it in it's full glory, no pleats. Solution...........use the lining template for the outer as well. Not only does it showcase the fabric but it's so quick to make you will have half a dozen new bags before you know where you are!
Here's one I made all for me!

Even had enough fabric left to make a little purse and a junk/make up pouch. The little coin purse was made using the tutorial over at noodlehead http://www.noodle-head.com/2009/10/zippy-wallet-tutorial.html, it's so easy and well explained. I can't seem to find the link for the bag right now but if I do I will post it as it too is an easy make, and yeah, the head band, great one for the kids to do, just cut some felt flowers on your die cutting machine or by hand and stitch or glue on a stretchy head band, mine were 3 for a pound at the local pound shop.
The white bag is just a couple of 12 inch squares and I went a bit mad with the felt flowers. Nothing fancy about this one not even boxed corners.moggymaniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18023383519323773774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6834900503991562667.post-18374959291658187192012-07-13T13:02:00.001+01:002012-07-13T13:02:46.940+01:00Guilty as charged!Yup, blog neglect! First up we have what has been christened the Meg mitt! My friend has not long bought herself a lovely little collie puppy so her oven mitt is now officially the Meg Mitt. No tutorial to go with this one as its fairly simple, just draw around your hand with a very generous seam allowance, cut two each of your exterior and lining fabrics and two double layers of heat resistant/cotton wadding. Make a sandwich of your exterior fabric (right sides together) in the middle of your two double layers of wadding and stitch leaving the bottom open. Do the same with the lining minus wadding. Turn the exterior so its the right way out, slip the lining inside it and join together with your binding of choice.
This is more my type of thing, it's black, it's not too big and is very simple. Again very basic. I have found a use for my vinyl records! They make a perfect template for making bags. This one is just 4 12 inch squares, two outer, two lining with boxed corners with two fabric handles. Easy peezy, it's got to be really as I have no patience for fiddly and complicated.moggymaniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18023383519323773774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6834900503991562667.post-20618710675635429632012-06-28T14:42:00.001+01:002012-06-28T14:42:25.234+01:00WaddingOnly I could get excited about wadding! Been looking all over the net for pure cotton wadding at a reasonable price and lo and behold I found some today right on my doorstep. Gotta love little local shops.moggymaniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18023383519323773774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6834900503991562667.post-62338180681144971242012-06-21T00:40:00.001+01:002012-06-21T00:40:26.330+01:00Woo Hooooo! It was kinda getting all mixed up and was neither one thing or another so I've decided to seperate them so here is hopefully for my makes that aren't paper based.
I recently bought myself a sewing machine, and like my sewing skills it's very basic, I'm hoping this blog will be a bit of a semi tutorial kinda thing. I'm rubbish at working with patterns (I don't understand half the lingo) so from time to time I will post my take on things I've made in easy to understand terms (they have to be for me to follow them), and no doubt will post my mistakes and mishaps, that's how I tend to learn, from my many and varied mistakes.
So to start us all off here's a pic of one of the first bags I have made, it's a very simple tote with boxed corners (there are already hundreds of tutorials out there).
Please feel free to comment on anything and add your know how or ask questions.
Catch ye all later x
